The View From The Helm

April showers will bring May flowers so the old saying goes and we certainly have had our share of April’s showers! Fortunately we all know what May-flowers bring ... Pilgrims! Pardon the pun, but we are Pilgrims of Faith venturing into the uncharted and unsettled waters of the global community. Through our association with Inter Church Council and the United Church of Christ (UCC) our local ministries can and do become , albeit small, parts of the wider outreach to those in great need. Indeed the seeds of our charity will become ‘flowers’ of Christian good-will that ‘May’ reach far beyond our own doors.
The economy is very much on our minds these days. Fortunately warmer weather will ease the burden of heating for a few months but realistically our belts will have to be tightened ... again. Refrain from the ‘picking up something for supper’ routine. Avoid impulse shopping. Shop for the week or the month. Likewise plan your driving to include as many appointments as possible on one given day. Shop the sales. Buy before the holidays.
The reality of our faith , however, not only survives economic difficulties, it actually thrives and grows wherever and whenever there is need. The women who gave her ‘widows mite’ to charity, the Samaritan who stopped to aid the stranger, and the preacher from Nazareth who gave all he had to us in our greatest need represent the true wealth of humanity; the inexhaustible good nature that makes God’s gift of life worth living to it’s fullest measure.
That said, enjoy the sunshine. Get out into the garden. Mow the lawn. Clean the garage and the attic. Go fishing. Play golf. Fire up the barbeque. Take a walk. Listen to the birds. Visit your neighbor. Call an old friend. Give thanks for all these blessings. Enjoy the Son shine!
                               Peace, Pastor Bob
